Phil Kullmann’s RAW ARTISTIC SOUL are a 14 strong international collective of singers and quality musicians culled together from all different cultures, sharing a combined focus of producing impeccable music inspired from around the world featuring Rafael Cortes (Carlos Benavent, Maria Serrano) and Domingo Patricio (Flute-player of Paco De Lucia, Enrique Morente und Vicente Amigo),Christoph Eidens and vocalists Migrant Souls, Laygwan Sharkie (Zimbabwe), Edisney Portales Vega (Cuba), Mirta Junco Wambrug (Cuba) and Blain Paulos (Ethiopia), in recording as well as stunning live performances. RAW ARTISTIC SOUL released their first 12" “The One Cultural Groove EP” on GOGO Music in autumn 2004. The tracks “Nawella” and “Pa El Bembe” reached great acclaim and were supported by the likes of Roger Sanchez, Rainer Trueby and Brian Tappert, entered the UK Hype charts on # 14 and were nominated by “Spirit of house” for Single of the year 2004. Their second and current single “Kana EP” is an afro-beat outing featuring remixes from Can7 and SUGAR BEAT. Keep it locked for the band’s third EP including tracks “Felipes Dubstyle” and the album title track “What About Love” remixed by acclaimed Africanism and Soulfuric act S.U.M.O.

Phil Kullmann is a versatile producer, remixer and live artist. Having travelled extensively and influenced by so many various music styles of the world, he developed an inventive production style and tasteful feel for many varied musical forms, from Latin, House, Disco, Afro Beat, Funk, Dub, Reggae and Jazz all of which are prominent in his One Cultural Groove project. Programming drums since he was nine years old, Phil learned to mix electronic music and programming with real played instruments. He studied drums in Duesseldorf, Germany and latin percussion in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He also joined private lessons with world-top-percussionist like Bashiri Johnson, Luis Conte, Giovanni Hidalgo and Alfonso Valdes. As percussionist Phil Kullmann plays in German top bands like “Max Herre” band and the Fantastischen Vier. Playing several instruments percussion, drums, bass, keys and having an enormous knowledge of traditional Afro Cuban, Brazilian and African music, he creates his own vibrant dance beat.

RAW ARTISTIC SOUL are the brainchild of German percussionist and producer Phil Kullman. Here he’s pulled together an army of 14 musicians from around the world to craft a huge rhythmic soundstage that seamlessly sweeps in true samba school fashion from start to finish. It’s hard to pick out highlights because each cut melds into the next with unifying, infectious rhythms. The only two stopping off points are “Felipes Dubstyle” and “Ra Soul Vibes”. The former is as the title implies while the latter is marginally more restrained than the other cuts, its still call to the floor though. The lead instrument is the vibraphone but the big attraction is the almost High Life brass section. I kept coming back to it time and time again. For the rest: well be prepared to be swept along in one huge rhythmic tide. Best reference points for the album? Well, maybe Snowboy meets Bah Samba, but with much more world music input; a heady dance cocktail indeed.

Quite illustrative of the obvious gearing towards quality around comes this album which, no doubt, should reach the expectations of those in search of not only da good groove but (good) music with a meaning. Thanx to German musician/producer Phil Kullmann and GOGO Music label head Ralf GUM for investing into such an ambitious project. And what a brilliant collection this is with musicality and musicianship at their very best, involving no less than 24 people, the origins of which being for much on the impression of real travelling left while listening to it. A collection which, no doubt (neither), should speak to people such as Louie Vega, Joe Claussell, Dennis Ferrer, not to mention Rainer Trüby, Jazztronik and most of those Japanese ‘world’ jazz headz such as Sunaga T and the likes. With some infinite care, Kullmann and cohorts have managed to provide us with the perfect environment to tease our minds, senses and imagination, bringing us to some shiny destinations somewhere between Africa, Latin America and the West Indies. Transportation guaranteed!

This is not only a debut album but also a debut on jazz-not-jazz, a review of an album that was produced and recorded in my homeland Germany.
Phil Kullmann is the mastermind behind RAW ARTISTIC SOUL. He wrote, co-wrote, recorded, arranged and mixed What About Love plus he plays keys, drums, percussion. Pretty impressive! But RAW ARTISTIC SOUL isn’t another one man show where one tries to do everything and misses the spot. Phil has teamed up with a spectacular line-up of 14 musicians and singers to give the idea of a musical collective a renaissance. And no, I won’t mention all the names here even though space isn’t really an issue in an online review :-)
If you know the first 12″ single of RAW ARTISTIC SOUL, The One Cultural Groove EP from autumn 2004, that included Nawella and Pa El Bembé, you have a small impression of the collective’s sound. A fine blend of house rhythms with Latin, Afro and Spanish elements.
The first songs like What About Love or Cocobutter are a little too pop-happy-go-lucky-house for my personal taste. So I better skip them.
Things get much better with Flores Para Ti though. This is a classic Latin/Spanish house track with great guitar work and scatting by Rafael Cortes. MAW and George Benson would be proud of this song.
It gets even better with the stomping afro inspired groove of Felipes Dubstyle with its brass section. Fela Brasil is another highlight, a cool summer groove with lots of percussion and a flute by Domingo Patricio.
Ra Soul Vibes features Christoph Eidens on vibes who gives this song a Roy Ayers feeling. Together with trumpet and trombone this is a stunning little ditty.
There also a great Afro-Cuban song (Esto Si Lleva) with call and response by Edisney Portales Vega and Michel Martinez. This song wouldn’t be out of place on any Snowboy album.
Add to this the afore-mentioned hypnotic groove of Nawella and the percussion-driven Pa El Bembé plus the introspective Buddhism and you have a diverse album full of warm and highly danceable sounds. Who needs summer when you can have your own piece of summer with RAW ARTISTIC SOUL’s journey into sound when it’s released on May 9th 2005?

If you listen to this album, you would never guess that this is a band living and working in Cologne, Germany. The sound is global, open-minded and simply irresistable. There's nice brass in "Cocobutter" featuring Blain Paulos bolstered by steel drum. Other highlights of this varied masterpiece are "Flores Para Ti" featuring Rafael Cortes with its divine Spanish guitar, the chunky "Corazon", the warm and funky "Bathanga Vibes", the heartfelt emotional "Fela Brasil" with its angelic voices and sumptuous flute-driven musicality courtesy of Domingo Patricio and the very Louie Vega style "Esto Si Lieva" featuring Edisney Portales Vega. Phil Kullmann aka Raw Artistic Soul bracht sinds 2004 al enige 12” releases uit via GOGO Music, alvorens dit strakke album verscheen. Op het album, dat 14 solide tracks telt, wordt hij veelvuldig bijgestaan door gastartiesten. Dit debuutalbum verscheen reeds in maart van dit jaar, maar willen we alsnog even bespreken. De titeltrack “What About Love” verscheen in juni op 12” en is een ijzersterk begin van dit album. Het is leuk om te horen dat deze act met alle gemak diverse muzikale stromingen (veel elementen uit Latijns Amerika en Afrika) weet te mengen tot een fabuleus dansbaar geheel. De soulful house en garage sounds blijken nog steeds populair te zijn en dat komt zeker ook door de torenhoge kwaliteit van veel producties. Dit in tegenstelling tot het kopieergedrag in het ‘grooves’ genre, dat hier toch redelijk dicht tegenaan ligt. Beste track: de latin breaks van het fabuleuze “Flores Para Ti”, waaraan Rafael Cortes zijn medewerking verleend door middel van fenomenaal spel op de akoustische gitaar en ook nog wat zingt. Ook de track “Felipes Dubstyle” vinden wij geweldig vanwege de opzwepende programmering van blaasinstrumenten. Conclusie: een muzikaal album dat je zowel thuis als in de intiemere clubs feilloos kunt gebruiken. Een regelrechte kanshebber voor de jaarlijstjes. Kijk op www.gogo-music.net voor meer informatie!

Aber Konkurrenz ist natürlich nicht die Motivation für den Profi-Perkussionisten und Produzenten Phil Kullmann, der als Spiritus rector hinter RAW ARTISTIC SOUL steckt und schon bei Max Herre und den Fantastischen Vier für den Groove sorgte. Vielmehr geht es bei RAW ARTISTIC SOUL um die Vision einer multikulturellen, niemanden ausschließenden Musik: Global Beat im eigentlichen Wortsinn. Die Basis dafür legt Phil Kullmann auf ' What About Love ' mit einem lässig zupackendem, mit Afro- und Latin-Rhythmen belebten House-Fundament, auf dem sich eine Reihe von Stimmen aus Kuba, Zimbabwe, Äthiopien in den jeweiligen Landessprachen entfalten dürfen. Sowohl in der Auswahl von Sounds als auch bei den Melodien und den rhythmischen Arrangements zeigt sich da eine Souveränität, wie man sie bislang eben nur bei den genannten Meistern gewohnt war. Der Perkussionist, der u.a. für Fanta 4 und Max Herre trommelt, verschreibt sich dem durchgängigen Housebeat und reichert ihn mit unterschiedlichen Zutaten an. Heraus kommt eine Melange, die man als Ethno-House in Richtung Masters At Work bezeichnen darf. Auf der Bühne werden auf der im Herbst stattfindenden Tour gut ein Dutzend Musiker zu finden sein. Auf die Umsetzung darf man gespannt sein. Toller Einstieg.

Es kracht gewaltig auf "What About Love". Da scheppert die Trommel, da wackeln die Congas, Shekere und Djun Djun folgen. Und wer jetzt noch folgen kann, wird sich auch nicht über Sabar oder Shaker wundern. Wenn das Line-up beinahe länger ist, als das geschriebene Review, deutet dies auf akribische Detailarbeit hin. Tatsächlich ist es nicht zu leugnen, dass sich hier eine ganze Heerschar an Vollblutmusikern mit ganzem Einsatz und sicher mächtig viel Spaß an ein Werk gewagt hat, dass zur Aufgabe hat, Grenzen zu sprengen und der Norm zu entfliehen. Wahrlich sind es nicht zu viele Köche, denn der Brei ist nicht verdorben. Es ist vielmehr eine wunderbare Symbiose aus einer Fülle von Einflüssen, musikalischen Ideen und Instrumenten, die "Headmaster" Phil Kullmann zu koordinieren weiß. Er verstickt sich nicht in Eintönigkeit oder Überfrachtung. Jedes feinstes Musikdetail ist im richtigen Moment akzentuiert.
Mit "RAW ARTISTIC SOUL" möchte der Produzent, Perkussionist und Remixer ein neues Zeichen setzen und hat dabei eine klare Vision. Papa Wemba trifft auf Mory Kante, Hugh Masekela auf die Mahotella Queens. Man vermutet dennoch etwas Neues aus Südafrika. Weit gefehlt. "Das Rohe, das Künstlerische und die Seele kommt direkt aus Köln. Die Frage "What About Love" kann ruhigen Gewissens positiv beantwortet werden. Es ist die Liebe zur gemeinsamen Sprache Musik, die hier glanzvoll in Erscheinung tritt. b

Erstaunliches Projekt aus Köln. Multitalent Phil Kullmann scharrt im Studio zwei Dutzend (!) Mitstreiter aus sämtlichen Stilecken um sich und es entsteht ein House-Album der Extraklasse. Afro-Cuban, Worldbeat, Reggae, Jazz, die musikalische Bandbreite der Studioprofis ist immens und Phil samt Partner lassen es 14 Tracks lang grooven, als gäbe es kein morgen mehr. Wahrscheinlich ist es die Vielzahl virtuoser Live-Instrumente, die griffigen Vokalarrangements und der unerschöpfliche Stylepool der Beteiligten, die die Magie des Albums ausmachen und für unbedingten Durchhörzwang plädieren. Niemand würde sofort darauf kommen, dass diese Sounds aus Kölle kommen. Aber mal ehrlich, Lukas Podolski spielt ja auch eher brasilianisch. Respekt Phil und Lukas!

Für die Mische von lateinamerikanischen Rhythmenund House sind ja eigentlich Masters At Work zuständig. Doch die Latin-Dancefloor-Burner vom Mastermind Phil Kullmann, eingespielt mit einer 14(!)-köpfigen Liveband reißen einen schlichtweg vom Hocker. Dieser… ähem Livespirit ist in jedem Akkord zu hören. Endlich passiert mal was in dieser Richtung.
